Well, the field school is off and running with the group of us holed up in Ypres in the cutest little hostel/school that I've ever seen (not that I've seen that many). We have dormitory style rooms with bunk beds and flat sheets that we have to fold around our mattresses a la hosplital corners. The energy is bursting through everyone in spite of the severe jet-lag most of us are still suffering from. We have a proper school room, complete with blackboard (the sight of which produced much groaning from the students). The "hotel school" also offers us the first reliable internet we've found since arriving in Europe (some of us have been here for a while).
The hotel we're in is situated directly across the street from the Menin Gate and a short walk from a beautiful town square. After dinner tonight many of us went strolling through the town and took the opportunity to explore the Menin Gate at our own pace.We easily found names of Canadian soldiers as the lists of the fallen are divided by regiments and the Canadian regiments cover much of the wall leading up and around the stairs. It's truly impressive to see the names of so many Canadian soldiers being honoured this far from home.
